The joys of weaning vs Breast is Best!

From birth to 6 months, it is exhilirating to see how Morgan developed from a tiny bob of 8 and a half pounds to a major blob of about 8 and a half kilos!

- thanks to the wonders of breastfeeding!

Typical of Asian-Chinese society, I've also grown up with many breast-myths passed down for generations such as :
1. Chinese breasts are too small to breastfeed,
2. there is not enough milk in Chinese breasts,
3. formula milk is more nutritious than breast milk, ... the list goes on!
Thank God with Morgan I've been lucky and healthy enough not to need milk bottles or formula powder at all. When we were travelling in China, many Chinese people simply could not believe that Morgan was totally breast-fed!

In one particular case, a car-park Chinese-lady attendant tried to discourage me from breast-feeding because ....
1. the hot weather will make breast milk turn sour,
2. breast milk will damage the mental development of a baby,
3. breast milk does not provide enough for the hungry baby.

She looked at me and said unbelievingly - "Can breastfeed? Got enough milk?" At that instance, I plugged him on the spot and it didn't take me long to convince her though.

I feel so lucky in the UK to be provided with a range of information through the ante and post-natal classes organised by the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) which in many ways educate me on the options available. It also makes all the difference when your partner is supportive and the atmosphere around you is encouraging. (Hey kai-ma, thanks for all those good advice and having the confidence in me!)

7 months on, Morgan continues to thrive well. In fact I find weaning more difficult and troublesome especially when we go out. This is because there is always his own set of food and water to prepare in case the food available is not suitable for him.

Since weaning at 6 months, he has almost skipped the purees, baby-mash and 'chok' (a form of bland porridge chinese-style) phase because it is all too babyish for him now. The good thing is he will eat off our plates.

Sometimes he relishes his food with delight ..........

at other times he enjoys stuffing himself with paper-towels and whatever lies on the floor!

But the best one is when he tries to feed himself -

oh what joy!
Comments:
Hi Patsy. Lactating is a big deal, isn't. We're still at it. I try and slip in a cup of cow milk and formula to try and wean. Once we wean, we can't go back. An era will be gone.

Ella took her first couple steps today. =)
